Distraction.
What is distracting you in practice? Or even right now, as you have read just a couple of words, are you already moving on in your thought? Thinking about what is next to come in your day or worrying about that which has passed…
Distraction is the killer of dreams, a lack of clear direction and a failure to be conscious of purpose in every interaction will rob you of your dreams.
This week I want to share with you the three major distractions of humans, and that includes you. But I also want to give you the key to overcoming this and setting yourself up for a win.
This win may be a bigger practice, it could be a stronger relationship, it could be masterful adjustments with predictable outcomes. Whatever you are struggling with right now in your 360 success, I can assure you that distraction is the major player in you falling short.
So, what are the major distractions?
1. Food.
2. Sex.
3. Ambiguity.
You know it, that thought of food is ever present for many of us, caught in the gluttony of what’s next to eat. A simple distraction you may think but caught in the moment of an adjustment could increase the likelihood of harm or poor outcomes for your patient. But worse than the luring thought is the ‘hangover’ and lethargy of poor eating. Do you find yourself fatiguing in practice, aching and sore after a shift? Maybe, just maybe your nutrition and hydration are not as good as they could be. Compound this by the incongruence of telling your patients one thing, and doing another, there is no wonder a practice struggles.
And no I’m not a nutritionist so I’m not going to give you suggestion, you know what you need to do. Beat the distraction and commit.
Sex is a similar beast, following the temptations of sex, infidelity, sex appeal, porn, or lust. Need I go on… A major human driver is sex, channelled right it is a powerful motivator and energiser to one’s purposeful direction in life. But with weakness and distraction it can blindside you in an instant and destroy your consistency and action.
Successful people are sex driven and bound by this natural urge, however they channel it well and avoid its distractions.
Ambiguity, do you find yourself being ‘vanilla’, agreeing and pleasing all you see and deal with. Are you trying to win friends and patients though agreement on their terms? Strength and voice of your own convictions is a powerful player in your success, but bending to others wishes and needs to please drops your foothold and dampens your authority and respect.
This is not to say be bullish in your opinion, but to be sure that the conclusion is yours and not be afraid to voice it.
I know these topics may seem a little off key for our usual Wednesday discussion, but I feel they are needed now more than ever.
I recently travelled to Ireland to speak at their national conference and in my traveling, it was clear to see that we as humans have really let it go! Gluttony on every corner, overweight and struggling humans. I feel sorry for where we have been led and how we have been manipulated.
Chiropractors, however, have the ability to change that. You champion true health, a drug free approach and surely strength of character and opposition of the aforementioned three distractions is paramount to us changing our community’s health.
So, I charge you to lead by example, to step up and speak the truth, to others and to yourself.
And how do we overcome the ‘distractions’ I hear you say?
Control of your own mind, your own decisions, and your own convictions. When did you last pause free of distraction, in stillness and before the day has broken. When did you last decide the direction of your life and make the commitment to change.
Start today. Lead by example.
With love,
Tom
