The associate and the intrapreneur.
As a chiropractor the majority of us at one point in time have been an associate, and many stay an associate. I actually think there is so much to be said for the lifetime associate and if played right it can be the MOST rewarding and fulfilling job in the world, both in terms of service and financially.
However, so many associates miss the mark with perpetual frustration of never reaching their goals, getting frustrated with the practice owner, yoyo in their numbers and finances. And ultimately leaving one job for another under a cloud of bitterness, just to go and do it all again at the next place.
So this week, from one long term associate turned employer to you, I am going to give some truths about what an associate can do to become a rock star, have a thriving and abundant life, and become a true intrapreneur.
What is an intrapreneur? A person who works within an organization but has the tenacity, skills, and drive of the entrepreneur. Bonus, without the risk.
I believe an associate should be able to earn multiple six figures in a practice, have the drive to deliver more, but balanced with the lack of risk and non 24/7 input.
Here are my Top 5 traits of a super associate. And these are not aimed at the owner, but at you the associate as to what you can do to transform and change your life.
1. Leadership.
Taking responsibility for all actions yourself. Do not expect the practice owner or CAs to do all your work. Have an attitude of doing more than expected and leading by example. Muck in with the cleaning, upload your files. Be the first to arrive, last to leave. What you do speaks so loudly, that your team will be inspired to help you more, and with that you will grow.
2. Build your own practice.
It is easy to expect patients to come to you, waiting for the marketing campaign to kick in. However, we have all seen the fluctuations in new patients. Have an attitude of new patients need YOU, not that you need them. Put your trainers on and get out into your community and find your own practice.
3. Always be learning.
Let’s face it we are always learning and could always be better. I am often surprised at how many practice owners invest and coach with me, but how few associates take the opportunity. As an associate for 7 years, I invested heavily in coaching, at least £1000/month. As a practice owner it is now nearer £5000/month. Find mentors, courses, and council to help you grow. The investment always returns.
4. Communication.
If you have a grumble, talk. When we do not speak, disharmony follows. Make sure to keep up the conversation with your practice owner, team, and patients. Do not think that other knows what is going on, be honest with your frustrations, open with your praise and work with the team to win.
5. Think abundantly.
As an associate we often think we are limited. Let me make it clear, as an associate your potential to make money and have freedom far exceeds the principle. From a pay perspective, as an associate I have taken home £10k-£20k per month. As an owner, no more that £5k/month. Yes, there is leverage in business and wealth management. But if you play the game as an associate setting yourself up as a company, the sky really is the limit.
So there you have it, five key things to consider as an associate and how you can level up your practice and your life.
With love,
Tom
