Are you still educating?
Funny story for you today, a short one so it is worth a read!
4 weeks ago, as you know I had a small operation, this involved a spinal block. If you’ve not had one, holy shit! It was the craziest thing. I obviously went into the theatre room, billy big balls pretending not to be phased by it at all. When deep down I was scared, and I mean scared. I’ve seen people come to me after this has gone wrong.
Anyway, they start with the local anaesthetic, small needles and I begin to show my true colours! Blood pressure plummets, and on goes the oxygen. Then comes the big needle, deep breaths! I had a wonderful anaesthetist from Pakistan, she was so lovely, holding my hand and reassuring me.
Actually, I had 4 anaesthetists in the room, something was up…
I soon realised, once my legs were completely dead, lying on my back with no dignity at all in a room full of people, that one of these great anaesthetists was indeed a trainee.
So, I decided to play a game, asking her why I could feel general sensation but not pain and no movement. I was quizzing her neurology.
As it was, they all started to play along, until one of them asked, “what do you do, how do you know this neurology?” BINGO! My asking them questions had caused a reciprocation and now they asked me.
I spent the next 20 minutes on my side, not able to move my legs, my genitals open to the world and a surgeon working behind me, giving a lay lecture to the whole room on chiropractic, how it is the opposite of anaesthesia, how we have an intelligence to work with and how I could help them.
So, my question to you today. Are you still educating your people?
Be wise, do not ‘teach’, be clever, be curious and they will be so back.
With love,
Tom
