It’s not just what you show up for.
Being a chiropractor is fun, you get to take care of some wonderful people, see incredible changes, make an impact in your community, and get paid well for doing so.
So why do you sometimes feel bored, frustrated and out of love with what you do?
The world is always looking to external validation, a dopamine hit of congratulations, accolades, praise, and rewards. As a chiropractor I am sure you love it when a patient tells you how great you are at your job or when they leave you a 5* review.
This is a dangerous double edged sword however, for when we seek the external validation and feel the reward, we also are acutely aware of the opposite, of the criticism, the lack in comparison to others and worst of all, the silence… when we hear nothing!
This dictates how we show up often, we let the external environment and factors dictate how we feel towards our activity on any given day. For example, you book and show up to what is billed to be an amazing spinal screening event at a busy village show with loads of people interested in your service and an opportunity to help them and grow your practice.
However, when you turn up, you pitch is in the corner, near the portable toilets that are already festering. Now you feel downhearted and lost for hope.
You have two choices! Thrive and trudge through your day.
This example is one I had many years ago, and me and the chiropractor I worked with at the time decided to go all in. We may be by the toilets, but guess what? Everyone needs the loo at some point.
To this day that was the most active and most successful spinal screening event I have ever attended.
So, what is the moral of today?
It’s not what you show up for, the workday, the event, the dinner or the conference. It is how you show up. And how you show up is no one’s choice but yours.
I challenge you today to show up with the biggest heart and the most energy, and in the words of De Martini ‘When you are on fire, people want to come and see you burn!’
With love,
Tom
