Are you focusing on doing nothing wrong?
I get it, as a chiropractor there is always that anxiety and that worry that you may do something wrong, some harm, missing a diagnosis or hurt a patient.
A lot of this comes from regulation that is a little harsh and trigger happy, combined with some members of the public who let’s be honest, just like to make a fuss or try silly games for a quick buck. And unfortunately, by a simple law of probability, the more people you take care of, the more likely this is to happen.
With the cases that do happen the overwhelming majority end up with no case to answers, why? Because the chiropractor essentially did nothing wrong.
This fear is also combined with shame, so that many chiropractors simply hide their cases or do not talk about them, and this simply does not help us move forward. I have had my fair share, and some of these were unjust, and some, I really learned a lot from. Something I will be bringing you in the new year are lessons I have learned from this process and how you can do more to protect yourself and if a case does come, simply show that you too did nothing wrong.
But what I wanted to discuss today was around this saying; “don’t let the energy of the negative few, outweigh that of the positive many.”
There are hundreds if not thousands of people in your practice who have got exceptional life changing results from chiropractic care, take a minute to reflect on the year almost gone. Think of all those people who have come to see you and put their trust in you, think of the results they got, how their lives changed from their time with you.
It’s remarkable.
Too often in life we focus on not doing anything wrong. We worry about offending people, hurting people, litigation, and judgement. But I challenge you instead to think about and focus on what you can do right. How can you have that meaningful conversation and not simply chit chat. How can you be honest with a patient to enable them to change their lives, how can you better your technique and practice to get better results. What can you change or focus on to do more things right.
The world really does need you to show up as you, to be a leader by example and practice, to show people what is possible. My challenge to you for the final few weeks of this year is to do that.
Go all in on doing things right.
With love,
Tom
